Math Teachers Circle at USC

Department of Mathematics • University of Southern California

The Math Teachers Circle is a long running program aimed at K-12 math teachers in the Los Angeles area. Each meeting of the circle consists of dinner and mingling, followed by a mathematical activity designed by the organizers. The math circle is currently organized primarily by Professor Cymra Haskell.

This page hosts activity materials and other math circle information. The USC RTG project is proud to support new activities for the USC Math Circle via National Science Foundation Award DMS-2446019.

Classifying The Platonic Solids

Plato thought that the five elements were made of tiny Platonic solids. Famously, there are only five Platonic solids, but how do we know? This activity guides the participants through a proof of this fact that uses a concept from topology: the Euler characteristic. This activity was written by Julian Chaidez.
